Alternative Wedding Venues: Destination, Backyard, and Elopement Weddings

Not every couple follows the same venue search process. Some opt for destination weddings, backyard celebrations, or intimate elopements instead. These options can be a great fit, but they come with their own unique planning considerations. During this week’s bonus episode of 52 ‘Til I Do, we broke down what to expect when choosing one of these alternatives and how to navigate the process.

Destination Weddings: A Wedding and a Getaway in One

A destination wedding means choosing a location away from home, often in a scenic or meaningful setting. This could be a tropical resort, a European city, a mountain lodge, or even a family vacation spot. At Marryment, if a large number of guests will be coming to the wedding from out of town, we consider this to be a destination wedding.

What Makes a Destination Wedding Appealing?

  • It creates an immersive experience for couples and guests.
  • Many resorts and venues offer all-inclusive wedding packages.
  • It naturally keeps the guest list smaller, making for a more intimate event.

Challenges to Consider

  • Travel costs and logistics can be more work for both you and your guests.
  • Legal requirements for marriage vary by location and may involve additional paperwork.
  • Weather conditions, time zones, and cultural considerations can impact planning.

Planning Tip: If a destination wedding feels right for you, work with a planner to help with the details, from marriage licensing to vendor coordination.

Backyard Weddings: A Personal and Flexible Option

Hosting a wedding in a backyard—whether it’s yours, a family member’s, or a rented private home—allows for a deeply personal celebration. It can be cost-effective, but it also comes with its own logistical considerations.

What Makes Backyard Weddings Special?

  • You have complete control over the guest experience.
  • There is no venue rental fee, though other costs will still apply.
  • There are fewer restrictions on timing, décor, and vendor choices.

Key Planning Considerations

  • Infrastructure matters. Most backyards will need rented restrooms, a covered structure–such as a tent, power sources for lighting and music, and a catering prep area.
  • Permits and noise restrictions. Some areas require event permits or have noise ordinances, so check local regulations.
  • Weather backup plan. Tents and climate control options (fans or heaters) can help, but you need a solid alternative space if conditions change.

Planning Tip: Work with a rental company that specializes in backyard weddings to ensure you have the right setup, from power sources to restrooms to flooring for outdoor spaces.

Elopements: Intimate, Intentional, and Flexible

Elopements have evolved beyond their previously thought of courthouse wedding–an elopement is whatever you choose it to be. Today, couples choose to elope in meaningful locations with or without guests, creating a highly personal experience.

Why Do Couples Choose to Elope?

  • It allows for a completely customized experience without guest expectations.
  • It is often more budget-friendly than a larger wedding.
  • It can happen anywhere—mountains, city rooftops, national parks, or even at home.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Some locations require permits for ceremonies, photography, or gatherings.
  • You may still want to hire vendors, like a photographer, officiant, or hair and makeup artist.
  • Depending on the level of involvement you choose for your loved ones, consider how you will announce your marriage or if you will host a small post-elopement celebration.

Planning Tip: Even with an elopement, there are still elements of planning, from securing legal paperwork to booking travel accommodations if needed.

Which Alternative Venue Option is Right for You?

If you’re considering one of these non-traditional venue options, think about:

  • The guest experience and whether travel or accessibility is a concern.
  • The level of planning and logistics involved in making it happen.
  • Your budget and whether the option allows you to prioritize what matters most to you.

The only two things you need in order to get married are a legal document and the love you share with your partner. Whether you envision exchanging vows in a faraway destination, in a backyard surrounded by loved ones, or in an intimate elopement, the most important thing is choosing an option that feels authentic to you.
